When Typekit was bought by Adobe in 2011, it was obvious they had big plans for the use of fonts online. Adobe has always been at the forefront of digital fonts, of which web fonts are an increasingly important subset.Typekit is essentially a subscription based web font embedding service, and for many web designers and creative agencies, they’ve made the whole process of choosing quality web fonts for their clients as streamlined as possible,
even more so now that they’ve introduced desktop font syncing.
It’s often said that web design is 95% typography. Indeed, without typography, the web and by extension web design, would make little sense. Over the past few years, there’s been a dramatic increase in the amount of fonts available to web designers and the way they use them in their layouts. In this first part of the article, I’ll be looking at how we got to this point, the early days of web design and what the future holds.
